Martina Amati was born in Milan, Italy. She trained in Theatre Set Design at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, Milan, before moving to London in 1996 as part of the creative team that launched MTV Italy. She subsequently directed a number of documentaries that generated great interest on the international film festival circuit.

Martina has now moved into drama, having just completed A’Mare a 15 minute film set in Sicily. She is currently developing her next short film Gymnasts-Untitled – for which she is on the current shortlist for Cinema Extreme (UK Film Council, Film4).

Martina has been selected on to the Digital Shorts scheme by Film London with the project I-DO-AIR

I-DO-AIR
Emma is a little girl afraid to jump in the water. Humiliated she hides in the changing room and holds her breath to escape reality and ‘trip’ within her own head. But when a new world appears before her eyes, she finds her place in space.

I am a filmmaker and a freediver. With I-DO-AIR I want to combine my passions for filmmaking and the water, with a 4 minutes film. Told through a series of unique images that explore the themes of alienation, loss of control and escape from reality, this is a simple story of an afternoon swimming session that brings to the fore a psychological moment in childhood, that our character turns towards positive action.
