Charlie Sen
Having been introduced to filmmaking through a youth project, Charlie now works within the community/youth sector, for the Mediaworks Trust, where he has recently facilitated a ‘First Light’ (Film Council) training scheme, working with groups from disadvantaged communities.
Using his passion for Cinema to meld education with fun, Charlie uses a ‘collective’ approach, offering advice and support to workshop participants, through the full processes of script-writing, technical, production and acting, toward the completion of short films.
Charlie’s personal interests lie in the Third Cinema tradition and its application to New Wave British Cinema – which stems from his cultural background, deriving from India and the Sylhet region of Bangladesh.
Aside from this project, Bicycle – a feature drama following a street urchin’s struggle to prove himself – is Charlie’s other latest work, and one of a number exploring the British-Asian Experience.
Charlie has been shortlisted by EM Media with the project Diary of a Thugee.
Diary of a Thugee
The Thugees were an infamous band of Indian thieves, wiped out by the British Raj in the 19th century. Since adopted in the English vernacular, meaning ‘a criminal, who treats others violently and roughly,’ the film is a psychological study of one night in the life of a Thugee living in Britain.
Intertwined into one core theme – the Divine Mother – the film explores the relationships of the Mother-Son bond, the Masculine/Feminine paradox, the Worshipper and Revered, and bizarrely Master and Slave.
Set in contemporary Britain, with a ‘look’ that regresses to the dankness of the 80s, the film follows Ravi, as he recounts the comeuppance of his latest victim.
Lead through the perverse calling of a higher being, and moving from city centre to silent wasteland, via religious ceremony, Ravi finds himself asking: is this happening, is it a hoax, or is this imagination … and if so whose.
