UK writer makes the shortlist for Hollywood screenwriting comp

Mon, 5 Jul 2004

Congratulations to new screenwriter Paul May who has had his first Hollywood break with some timely help from The Script Factory. Earlier this year, we sponsored ten UK entrants to the annualScriptPIMP screenwriting contest. From more than 1400 entries, Paul is one of the twenty finalists announced on 1 July.

Paul is now preparing to fly to Los Angeles for the awards ceremony and the opportunity to pitch his project Afterlight to executives from more than 200 production companies and agencies. The shortlisted screenplays will subsequently be circulated to hundreds of production companies and agencies including American Zoetrope, HBO, MTV Productions and Creative Artists Agency, to name just a few. "It's fantastic to get this validation from people in the industry" said Paul. "It shows I'm not crazy in thinking I can write for the screen...or that if I am crazy, at least I'm in great company!"

The Script Factory's award of a free entry to the ScriptPIMP competition convinced him to complete his first attempt at a screenplay to professional standards: 'I'd never have finished the piece without the motivation of the contest, and I'd have been too mean to spring the entry fee myself. Pity I can't get hold of The Script Factory's private jet to take me to the awards event on 22 July..." [sadly, Paul...it's more Easyjet than private jet for The Script Factory!].
