About THE WRITER'S JOURNEY
Learn how to manipulate human emotions and create a modern screenplay with help from Hollywood expert Christopher Vogler.
Taught over 2 days during the weekend of 11 & 12 September, from 9.30am-6.30pm, at Birkbeck, University of London, Malet Street, London WC1E 7HX

Chris VoglerFind out why Hollywood studios employ Christopher Vogler to help them find the story in challenging material. The Writer's Journey is his two-day seminar offering the latest developments in Vogler’s thinking about myth, movies, and the deep structure of storytelling for the screen.
The Writer's Journey has become one of the cornerstones of modern screenwriting theory. Based on an influential memo Vogler wrote while working at the Disney studios, the book has been translated into eight languages and its ideas were promptly put to use by a whole generation of screenwriters and novelists. Meantime, as Vogler has worked on countless feature film projects as a consultant, writer, and producer, his concepts about myths and movies have continued to evolve. The world has changed, we are in a new era with different rules, and classic patterns like the hero's journey have to be re-examined for what they can tell us about the current state of movies and the world. Over two days Vogler will share the latest principles derived from his work as a story consultant on independent films and major studio features, and will update his model of the Writer's Journey.
Using the principles of drama, narrative, and myth you will learn how to structure a story for maximum emotional effect on the audience. You will understand why epic films like Gladiator and Lord of the Rings have the power to dominate in the global market. You will discover the essential factors needed to create epics as well as intimate human dramas like My Big Fat Greek Wedding and why both are so popular in these uncertain times. You will see what 'hero' really means and why audiences crave identification with heroic characters on any scale. You will learn to penetrate to the essence of a story, to find its heart.
You will learn the secrets of the dramatic experience, how the great storytellers learned to play the keyboard of human emotions. Vogler will reveal ten revolutionary principles about storytelling that will continue the work begun in The Writer's Journey, along with many other new principles and guidelines derived from recent projects. Come and learn from a master.
