A practical workshop intended to illuminate the craft and industry of radio drama for those that usually think ‘film’ when they think storytelling. Radio scripts share similar techniques and qualities to screenwriting and whilst nothing is ever easy or guaranteed, it is certainly possible that a good idea for a radio play by a first time writer can be commissioned - radio can be seriously writer-friendly! A number of previous participants on The Script Factory's Radio Training led by tutor Sam Hoyle have subsequently seen their work commissioned. Tom Green was one:

"I was on the Script Factory/Radio 4 course last summer (2007), so I thought you'd like to know that in the latest round I received a commission for an Afternoon Play... All I've got do now is write the script...! So, many thanks to Script Factory - the workshops were great."

(And Tom's drama The Tent, was broadcast on Radio 4 at 2.15pm on 1 June 2009. It starred Sian Reeves, Jeremy Swift, Joanna Scanlan and Janice Acquah and was directed by Toby Swift. See www.tomgreen-uk.com for more).

The workshop will be led by Sam Hoyle. Sam has worked as a Producer in Film, Television, Radio and Theatre, specialising in new talent and comedy. She was a Development Producer for BBC Radio Drama, and has recently developed and produced several hours of Audio Drama for BBC networks. Previous film roles include Script Development for Little Wing Films, Disruptive Element and the International Film Collective. TV credits include My Parents Are Aliens and 3 Non-Blondes.

Participants of this workshop will be sent a 60 minute radio play, and will be asked to view a film that has been adapted for radio, for common reference purpose in the workshop. The workshop is structured but informal and will encourage participants to contribute their thoughts and experience of listening to drama.
