So what exactly is a treatment? How can a film executive judge a screenplay idea from just a short prose document? How can you ensure that your treatment does justice to your film story?

An intensive programme taught by Rob Ritchie, this condensed afternoon session aims to take the fear out of treatment writing. This is a chance to consider the most effective ways of synopsising your drama plus gain an understanding of the function of treatments in the development process.

The Programme
The course starts by systemically working through the process of building up a feature film treatment from an initial paragraph about the story, through a one-page outline which fleshes out the main story beats and finally considers the detail required to indicate how this story will be ‘treated’ in the completed screenplay. All these versions of your story may be required when trying to obtain funding, secure a place on a development scheme or attract interest from producers.

In the latter part of the course we turn our attention to using the prose document as a development tool: how presenting the idea of the script in a prose form can usefully indicate to the writer the gaps or problems in the story. We’ll consider how building up a story in treatment form first not only helps to sell the idea but also helps to ensure that that there is a solid story shape in place before time is invested on the first full draft.

Friendly Producers
Writers who complete this course will also be invited to apply to our Friendly Producers scheme. Applicants will have approximately three months after the course takes place to submit a 2 page treatment and the first ten pages of a screenplay. We will then select writers from this and the other participating programmes who will benefit from the chance to discuss their film idea at a one-to-one meeting with the award-winning Brit producer, Mia Bays.
