State of Play
Having collected a BIFA for ‘Best Newcomer Behind the Camera’ for editing her very first feature, Justine Wright originally made a name for cutting documentaries that felt like thrillers. She’s now firmly entrenched in cutting actual thrillers with her latest work, the political thriller State Of Play, currently screening to excellent reviews. Her long association with director Kevin Macdonald has seen her work win an Oscar for One Day in September (1999), a BAFTA for Touching the Void (2003), and collect a best actor Oscar for Forest Whitaker’s performance in The Last King of Scotland (2006) alongside BAFTAs for Best Film, Best British Film and Best Adapted Screenplay. New Zealand born, Justine trained and worked in commercials for ten years prior to editing her debut feature. In between her work with Macdonald, she has edited two further feature dramas: Saul Metzstein’s Late Night Shopping (2001), and The Final Curtain (2002), directed by Patrick Harkins. Justine's next projects were the TV documentaries, Being Mick (2001), directed by Kevin Macdonald, and Daniel Gordon’s football documentary The Game of Their Lives (2002) which won Best Sports Doc at the British Television Awards. In 2006 Justine edited the TCM Classic Shorts Award winner Silence is Golden, directed by Chris Shepherd.
