Bespoke training courses and activities around the world for international filmmakers

The Script Factory back in Australia

In October 2011 we are returning to Australia for a fifth time to deliver not one but three training initiatives that will see us working with screenwriting talent, agents and distributors, producers and developers.

Screen Australia have invited us back to run the Script Developers Initiative for a fourth intake of Australian developers. This three-day course will introduce participants to a structured approach of assessing scripts and preparing a development strategy. By examining produced screenplays and reading early work by new screenwriters, participants will consider what makes a good screen story and learn to recognise screenwriting talent.

For graduates of the Script Development initiative, we’ll be running Wrestling the Redraft. An advanced programme for developers that comprehensively examines the craft of development, explores how to navigate through the tricky development process avoiding the common pitfalls, and how to set the next draft on course to exploit all the potential strengths of a movie idea.* We will be repeating this course in the UK in November – click here for more.

And if that wasn’t enough – we’ll also be taking The Script Factory’s renowned Script Reader Training to Australia’s Talent Agents and Distributors.

It is going to be a busy two weeks but we are delighted to have the opportunity build on the training offered in previous years and bring our ideas to a new intake of Australian filmmaking talent.

OUR WORKSHOPS

Development Workshops

By bringing together screenwriters with readers, developers and creative producers our development workshops not only provide new opportunities for collaboration but also create a group of people within the industry with a shared language of story. Each workshop takes participants through a structured course which begins with storytelling theory and progresses through practical methods of working with scripts and with writers. Our development training courses work by combining a diversity of session types including seminars and group discussions with individual writer and project specific consultations.

Screenwriting Workshops
As well as our development workshops we have a series of practical film script writing training workshops specifically for writers seeking to work up their film ideas for the international stage and hone their screenwriting skills. Sessions in which writers define the essential idea of their film are matched with those exploring how to then communicate it meaningfully on screen. Practical writing sessions can be accompanied by sessions pulling focus on the practical aspects of the craft including: scene development, visual storytelling, secondary character development, dialogue, backstory and subplots.

Low Budget Filmmaking
It is often argued that the vision, talent and desire integral to successful directors and producers are qualities that simply cannot be taught.

Whilst this may be true, there are many practical aspects of being a Film Producer that can, and should be, taught.

Drawing upon the direct experience of the industry professionals leading the training courses and utilising a combination of case studies, scene analysis and practical exercises our Film Producer workshops are designed to prepare participants for the myriad of creative choices, professional relationships and tasks involved at every step of a feature film's creation.

Television
UK broadcasters are known the world over for the quality of their output and for nurturing the writing, producing and directing talent that make it. Many of our most talented, innovative and creative writers, producers and directors first honed their skills by developing stories for the small screen and continue to do so. By drawing on this heritage we are now able to design training courses for industry professionals, that examine the specific processes and practices involved in producing captivating drama for television.

Script Factory script development workshops also offer participants the time to network, and to form working relationships based on a common understanding and a common language when approaching script problems, or generating or commissioning new projects. The participants make the material relevant to their home industry, simply by spending time out of work, thinking, talking and meeting each other.

Script Factory international workshops are usually run in conjunction with the local film fund, film institute, film festival, or through a production company.

Please email lucy@scriptfactory.co.uk if you would like to discuss staging a workshop in your country.
