An old but true adage is that good writers write about what they know. A brilliant writer like Charlie Kaufman takes a surreal approach to this, allowing his vast imagination to incorporate his own frustrations and struggle as a writer into his work, something particularly evident in Adaptation. All of Kaufman's work is based in complex character and story, the dynamics of which evolve in a back and forth, non-linear fashion during his writing process.

The resulting films have included Being John Malkovich and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and his genius has been recognised with a plethora of awards including three BAFTAs and an Oscar. Kaufman has been lucky enough to find collaborative directors such as Spike Jonze and Michel Gondry who give him the respect that he deserves, allowing him to be involved not just in the writing stage, but through every aspect of the production, including the edit.

This unusual experience for a writer has undoubtedly informed Kaufman as a director on his new film Synecdoche, New York, which premieres to UK audiences at the festival.

In this rare on-stage interview, Charlie Kaufman will join us to talk about the creative choices he has made so far, in a conversation with journalist and author, Toby Young.
