International Screenwriting and Story Development Programme

Caption

As well as our development workshops we have a series of practical programmes specifically for writers seeking to work up their film ideas for the international stage and hone their screenwriting skills. Sessions in which writers define the essential idea of there are matched with those exploring how to then communicate it meaningfully on screen. Practical writing sessions can be accompanied by sessions pulling focus on the practical aspects of the craft including: scene development, visual storytelling, secondary character development, dialogue, backstory and subplots.

Days can be divided between work on examining the components of a good screenplay with craft sessions, one-to-one development meetings and writing time. Writers can submit outlines of their personal projects prior to a programme to add immediate value by developing not only the writers but their slates of current projects.

These are some of the organisations we have designed and held screenwriting programmes for: Media Development Authority in Singapore, British Council and the Ramallah International Film Festival in Palestine and for the third year running we have been invited to India with the British Council and Whistling Woods Institute for Film, Television and Media Arts in Mumbai.

Please email lucy@scriptfactory.co.uk if you would like to discuss staging a workshop in your country.

SAMPLE PROGRAMME: THE STORY WORKSHOPS
The process of developing your film idea is structured around a five day workshop, which will concentrate on defining the essential idea that is driving your story and explore how to communicate that meaningfully on screen.

Finding the story in your idea
Where did the idea come from? Through practical writing exercises we examine the point of inspiration in order to ask what the meaning is for the writer.

Creating the characters and their world
A practical session in which we examine how to create characters that an audience will emotionally engage with.

Working with genre
Whether your film is ultimately destined for a big audience or niche market, if you are telling a story, it will have a genre. This session introduces Genre Theory and examines how audiences recognise and respond to story types.

What makes a strong screen story?
This session explores the three key principles of story telling for the screen: the central conflict, the structure and the controlling theme.

Good screenwriting
As well as a good story, you need to convince whoever reads your screenplay that you have the technical craft skills to render your idea for the screen. This session looks at the specific elements of screenwriting, from dialogue to scene construction.
