Derek Laviniere
Following a number of screenwriting courses at Birkbeck College (under Martin Patrick and Phil Parker), Derek enrolled at AFECT (Advancement of Film Education Charitable Trust), working on a number of short films as well as writing and directing two of his own. Following graduation, Derek has worked as production manager for a low-budget music video (for Primal Pictures/Liquid Stream) and produced the short film Abraham & Sons by writer/director Enwe Sebari. More recently, he co-produced the short film The Preacher for writer/director Peter Blach, and has production managed two short films scheduled for completion in summer 2008.
Derek has been selected onto the Digital Shorts Scheme with the project Playground
The script for Playground started out as a look on the fragility of childhood relationships, with a horrific discovery by the two main characters, MALACHI and NEIL, fracturing their friendship and revealing insights into the true natures of the two young boys. When co-writer/ director Avril Evans boarded the project, she strengthened it through bringing out the subtext of domestic violence and subtly integrating it into the story.
