Ghost in the Machine is a comedy-drama.
On a bleak, windswept farm, frumpy Noreen Gradgrind works like a slave and lives for the whim of her surly, controlling father. Never having had a day off, Noreen escapes into her daydreams: she imagines herself as a beautiful cowgirl, courted by a square-jawed cowboy.
On an errand to a remote part of the farm, she comes upon an abandoned 1940s tractor. Which begins to talk to her, with the kind of charm she could only hope for from a lover. Initially terrified, she is won over by it and lovingly restores it. On completion, her father declares his intent to sell the now pristine collectable and tear her away from her new best friend. But the tractor and a reawakened Noreen have something different in mind.
