Writer comps – 2 deadlines approaching

Tue, 25 Mar 2008
News of two excellent competitions for UK writers – one close to home and one from the heart of Hollywood. The first comes from production indie, IWC who are partnering with Channel 4 for COMING UP 2008, while the second is from Script P.I.M.P. in Hollywood.
The only talent scheme currently in the UK where emerging film-makers have the opportunity to make an authored drama with a guaranteed network broadcast, COMING UP is now in its eighth year, and continues a commitment to innovation, experimentation and new voices. The scheme will make up to 7 challenging and individual films from the best fresh talent in the UK. Each film will be for a half-hour C4 slot and the scheme is open to all writers who have NOT had an ORIGINAL single, series or serial broadcast on UK television; plus directors, and writer/directors. This is an excellent scheme – but note that the deadline for application is coming up soon on 4th April.

Meanwhile, across the pond our friends over at Script P.I.M.P. in Hollywood are now accepting entries for their annual screenwriting competition. If you've got a great script that you think would catch the eye of a studio or an indie, then you can take advantage of their online submission widget (and the super cheap dollar). Real producers, developers, agents and managers read the entries - and it's open to all comers.

Chadwick Clough from Script P.I.M.P. with writer Robert NelmsScript P.I.M.P. is a community-based research tool designed for writers & film industry professionals. Since June 2000, Script P.I.M.P. has gathered the specific needs and submission guidelines of production & management companies, literary agencies, independent producers and creative executives searching for new material. Along with extensive resources, this information is now available on a great Writers’ Database.
In our experience, and despite the best efforts of Shooting People, Raindance and other of our partners, UK writers are often ignorant about screenwriting competitions, and more importantly, don't really believe they can win – but Brit talent associated with The Script Factory has had a good shot at Script P.I.M.P. in previous years: Paul May (currently a writer partnering our Diploma in Script Development) was selected as one of the 16 finalists in 2005, and Geetika Lizardi (a Writers’ Passage West Midlands participant) crowned one of the 4 winners the same year.
Get your script in by 1 May to see if this year might be your shot at the big prize. Full details over at www.scriptpimp.com
Good luck!
