The third feature from rising star Brit horror writer/director, Neil Marshall, (The Descent and Dog Soldiers) is a fantastically action-packed thriller. Set in Scotland and amidst a ghoulish terrain of corpse-strewn cities, Doomsday is an ‘aftermath’ thriller which looks into a near future where our very existence is threatened by an horrific virus. With kick-ass action, explosive stunts, buckets of gore and a smart and knowing sense of humour, Doomsday heralds its director as someone truly confident at putting a new spin on conventional genre cinema.

An excellent home-grown cast is led by Bob Hoskins, Adrian Lester and Malcolm McDowell and finds a huge new all-action heroine in Rhona Mitra, playing it very much in the Sigourney Weaver/Linda Hamilton mold.

2008: Within days of outbreak, the horrific ‘Reaper Virus’ has infected millions in Scotland. The British government declares Scotland a ‘hot zone’ and quarantines the entire country to contain the ‘Reaper’s’ spread. Imprisoned by military blockades, Scotland is sealed off from the rest of the world, and left to die…

2033: The ‘Reaper Virus’ has resurfaced – this time in London. Faced with apocalypse, the government summons police chief Bill Nelson to reveal satellite images of survivors in the streets of Glasgow. Nelson assembles a crack team of specialists to retrieve ‘the cure’. Led by a feisty female major, the team venture into a forgotten Scotland where they discover the true horror of the Reaper’s legacy and the two.

Writer and director Neil Marshall’s no-budget debut, Dog Soldiers, became a cult hit in both the UK & US on release in 2002. His follow-up, The Descent (2005), was literally an underground horror feature which tracked a gang of doomed pot-holers to their sticky end. For Doomsday, he has channeled the best of legendary action cinema from Mad Max to 28 Days Later via Escape from New York to come up with a hugely entertaining new movie.

We’re delighted that Neil Marshall will be joining us on stage immediately after this preview screening to explain how it was done.
