Darren has been selected onto the Digital Shorts scheme by Screen Yorkshire with the project Vigilante.
Do the police and the judicial system do enough to tackle crime? Should citizens living in fear have the right to protect themselves and their property? What lawful acts are perceived as ‘criminal’? These are the questions raised in Vigilante - a controversial, dark, satirical mockumentary that will instigate debate surrounding justice system and invite the audience to question what they consider to be ‘justice’ and who they consider to be ‘criminals’.
The film is seen through the eyes of a documentary filmmaker following a number of characters from a vigilante group, set up to “do what the police do not” for helpless communities troubled by crime and populated by “scum”. The film will be in a documentary style, and although scripted, will only use the script as a guide. Additionally, a more manhandled approach to filming will give the impression of raw, documentary footage, that will in practice, be marginally smoother, slicker and more filmic to detach it very slightly from the real.
