The Queen presents an intimate portrait of Queen Elizabeth II during the crisis caused by the death of Princess Diana in a car crash in Paris. While the British public was overwhelmed with grief at the death of the 'People's Princess', the Royal Family was markedly unresponsive - a reaction which almost brought down the monarchy.
Queen Elizabeth finds herself in a maelstrom of emotions, as the new prime minister, Tony Blair, tries to convince her to satisfy 'her people' with an expression of grief, while at the same time the conflicts within her own family threaten to engulf her.
The Queen is a moving portrait of a woman whose every waking hour has been guided by protocol, and who finds herself in a situation where everything she has based her life on no longer applies.
The Queen is written by Peter Morgan, whose work is characterised by an acute sensitivity to the moral dilemmas of political life - as in The Deal, which charts the rivalry between Tony Blair and Gordon Brown for the crown of the Labour party, and Frost/Nixon, which presents the crucial television interview between David Frost and Richard Nixon that ended Nixon's political career.
