Since gaining his masters degree in 2008, Matthew Carter has been aiming to independently portray the cultural identity of the Black Country in the medium of film, whilst simultaneously working as a freelance camera operator.

In 2009 with the aid of Screen West Midland’s Anthony Hughes and Wolverhampton’s Lighthouse media centre, he and a group of fellow local film-makers exhibited personal experimental documentaries about the Black Country. This was referred to as “Black Country Cinema” and received a very positive response, including support from TV producing veteran David Rose.

He also frequently produces video blogs on YouTube showcasing the Black Country and its various locations.

Matthew has been shortlisted by Screen West Midlands with the project Luv'in The Black Country (Working Title)

Luv'in The Black Country (Working Title)
Over a period of time a variety of different people who walk the black country canals will talk about the first time they fell in love and their experiences. The people telling their stories will contrast with poetic images of the black country canals. This will be a lyrical love letter to the romantic black country canals.
