Charlotte Crofts

Charlotte Crofts is a writer/director with an eye for detail. After graduating with commendation from the University of Bristol, MA in Film and TV, her first short, Wings, was an homage to Wim Wenders' Wings of Desire and was screened at Brief Encounters Film Festival. She then went on to write, produce and direct Bluebell, a disquieting drama in which Juliette returns to the bluebell woods where her daughter was conceived to confront painful memories of the past; screened in competition at numerous international festivals including Polaroid Newcomers Award at Rushes Soho Shorts, Los Angeles Short Film Festival, Palm Springs Festival of Shorts and Seagate Foyle Film Festival. Charlotte teaches filmmaking at the University of the West of England and she's a member of the Digital Cultures Research Centre, based at the Pervasive Media Studio Bristol, researching creative technology and locative media.
Charlotte has been shortlisted by South West Screen with her project Games.
Games is a techno romance set on one transformative night in Bristol during an interactive games festival. Marta and Peter ride the city on bicycles fitted with sat nav in a game called 'Ride and Seek', recording secret messages and eavesdropping on other people's answers. A newcomer to the city, Marta uses the game like a confessional, spilling her soul out into the night, desperate to connect. Peter, an insular computer geek who hides behind Facebook, senses that he must engage with real life in order to be fully human, but is paralysed by the fear that his recordings may be overhead. He listens in on one of Marta's recordings and falls in love with her voice. Will Peter overcome his distrust of mobile communications in time to find Marta and win her love? Inspired by the interesting games festival (igfest.org), Rider Spoke (blasttheory.com) and the possibilities of location-based media to get us out of the virtual and back into the real world. The overriding theme is that we have to takes risks in order to find love and connect.
