Michael Davies
Michael Davies is an award winning writer, producer and director of drama and documentary, and has recently completed work on the BBC’s flagship children’s drama series Tracy Beaker Returns.
Following a BA in Drama from Manchester University, and an MA in Film and Television from Bristol, Michael began his career in BBC Television Features, working on a wide range of projects, including his critically acclaimed series, Barnardo’s Children.
His career as a freelance director began with the comedy observational documentary Going To Chelsea, the first of many successful collaborations with multi-award winning producer Beryl Vertue; subsequent projects include the drama-documentary The Welsh Great Escape, and the BAFTA nominated series The War Behind The Wire.
His latest short film, What’s ’virgin’ mean?, has been selected for more than thirty festivals, winning several awards, and has had almost 500,000 hits on You Tube. Michael is currently developing several drama projects.
Michael has been shortlisted by South West Screen with the project Love At First Sight .
Inspired by a respect for older people and a desire to challenge the bizarre but widely held belief that old people are somehow too old to fall in love, Love At First Sight is also an acknowledgement of a fear of losing one’s memory, and of facing up to a life threatening illness – Alzheimer’s disease.
Love At First Sight is a comedy - a genre I am particularly interested in. I think comedy is the most effective way of drawing the audience in and making them engage with the themes of this film, although its message is ultimately serious.
I’m aiming to make a film that has the widest possible appeal: a comedy with a message, aimed at young and old. The intention is to move, to entertain, and to encourage a more positive view of older people, and especially of those suffering from dementia.
