Penn and Watts in 21 Grams
Sun, 8 Feb 2004
With Amores Perros, mexi-duo director Iñarritu and screenwriter Arriaga grabbed the film world by the throat and demanded to be heard; the film immediately established them as one of cinema’s most enticing prospects in decades. Now, with their hugely anticipated second feature, the English-language 21 Grams, they’ve proved that early success was no fluke – the film has been nominated for countless BAFTAs, Golden Globes and Oscars and it’s yet to be released in most countries - and we have an exclusive preview on Saturday 14 February!
Starring Sean Penn, Benicio Del Toro and Naomi Watts, the film sutures several stories to examine the effects of catastrophe on three individuals. Following a special preview screening of what is certain to be one of the year’s most important film releases, screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga joins us to discuss his work; reveals his interest in structuring stories in complex and imaginative ways; and explores his relationship with both story and director.
This is your last chance to preview the film before finding out whether Guillermo Arriaga scoops the Best Original Screenplay at the BAFTAs on Sunday!

Naomi Watts in 21 Grams PRAISE FOR 21 GRAMS:
"A genuinely thrilling emotional experience - often unbearably tense, occasionally heartbreakingly sad, ultimately uplifting but always, always riveting.....Iñárritu and his collaborators have created something astonishing, and your cinema-going year will be incomplete if you miss it.....Superb...... 21 Grams strives for greatness, and that's precisely what it achieves."
***** Rob Fraser, Empire
"Magnificent."
*****Alex Bilmes, GQ (FILM OF THE MONTH)
"Raw and draining, but eerily beautiful. The performances of the three are uniformly breathtaking. Penn is his usual brilliant self."
John Patterson, The Guardian
"You won't see more explosive acting this year. Penn's continuing mastery of his craft amazes. Del Toro is amazing. Watts is miraculous in an all-stops-out performance. That Inarritu shapes something redemptive out of blasted lives is proof that he is a filmmaker of rare and startling grace."
Rolling Stone
"Be prepared for it. The depths of intimacy that the director plumbs here are so rarely touched by filmmakers that '21 Grams' is tantamount to the discovery of a new country.
It may well be the crowning work of this year."
Elvis Mitchell New York Times 2003
"The film is exhilarating , shot with an immediacy and rawness that grips from the opening frames."
The Times Screen
"An unflinching modern masterpiece."
