Mike Hodges' Black Rainbow
Wed, 19 Nov 2008
News of an excellent chance to catch up with the work of one of the grand old men of Brit cinema, as a celebratory season gets underway at London’s ICA. We have special prices for Script Factory readers AND some comp tickets to win. Mike Hodges, famed for Get Carter among several other classics, will be on stage to introduce his ‘other’ masterpiece – the rarely seen psychological thriller Black Rainbow - and to talk about his career in movies. Following that, Hodges’ cult 70’s Sci-Fi gem The Terminal Man, based on a novel by the late Michael Crichton, and never released in the UK, has an exclusive screening.
To bid for a chance to win a pair of free tickets for both landmark events, simply tell us the name of Hodges' cult feature starring Clive Owen and set in the murky world of casinos. Answers to general@scriptfactory.co.uk by noon on Wednesday 26 November - and please write HODGES in the subject field.
And never fear if you’re not the lucky winner this time – you can still get a special discount price by quoting Script Factory when you call to book for either event – or a even better, scoop a half price deal if you book both together.
Black Rainbow
Plus Mike Hodges in Conversation
This rarely seen psychological thriller sees stage medium Martha Travis (Rosanna Arquette) travelling around the Bible Belt of America with her alcoholic father (Jason Robards). When she suddenly develops the real gift of prophecy she unwittingly becomes the target of a killer… Despite a truly prescient script from Hodges and wonderful cinematography from Gerry Fisher (Highlander, The Go-Between), Black Rainbow was blighted by poor theatrical distribution in the UK on relase in ‘89 (Palace Pictures was going under at the time). It has since become something of a cult movie and remains one of Mike Hodges’ most personal films.

Director’s Cut of The Terminal Man
Catch the first screening of the director’s cut of Mike Hodges’ cult 1970s sci-fi gem The Terminal Man, based on a novel by the late Michael Crichton, and never released in the UK. George Segal stars as a psychotic who has a tiny computer put in his brain to control violent urges. Terrence Malick (who in 1974 had recently directed Badlands) liked the film so much he wrote to Hodges: "I want you to know what a magnificent, overwhelming picture it is. You achieve moods that I've never experienced in the movies before, though it’s only in hope of finding them that I keep going. Your images make me understand what an image is."
