FAQ's
I’m writing a romantic comedy and want Arnold Schwarzenegger and Tilda Swinton to play the lovers. How do I get my script to them?
For production contacts, simply looking on the web, searching by the company name and the word 'contact'.
There are various publications to aid your search: The Filmmaker's Yearbook, (pub. A&C Black) updated yearly contains great industry listings; if you are taking this very seriously you might invest in The Knowledge (available as a huge tome in book form and in an online version). Also on line, try www.mpe.net for names and contacts of individuals and companies based in the US searchable by category, region, and name. Similarly, www.theproductionguide.co.uk which is associated with Broadcast and Screen, has a vast online database for UK TV producers including companies and freelancers. Finally, the industry online bible The Internet Movie Database (IMDB) has a fairly useful professional section - you have to pay for it, and it's a little patchy - but when it's good it's really good! Sign up at IMDB Pro.
To get to individual actors you are best trying via their agent. ‘Contacts’ published by actor’s bible Spotlight, updated yearly covers stage, radio, film & TV contacts (from good bookshops, available for perusal at the Spotlight Offices 020 7437 7631, or in an on line version at www.spotlightcd.com
To locate US stars on the web you can go to the delightfully titled www.whorepresents.com (that’s 'who represents' rather than whores doing anything) to get their agent details. If you’re very stuck, note that the majority of actors that you have seen on screen will necessarily be members of an actor’s union who will have details of their agent – most commonly in the UK this will be British Actors Equity Association www.equity.org.uk or in the US, the Screen Actor’s Guild www.sag.org
